Description

Cranes have been around for nearly 40 million years and there are 15 species of cranes in the world. Cranes became extinct in the UK around 400 years ago as they were hunted for food and the wetlands they lived in were drained and used for farming.

Cranes do sometimes appear in the UK when bad weather causes them to lose their way when migrating across Europe. In the 1970s, three cranes spent the winter in the UK for this reason. Those cranes bred and were joined by others, and now there are around 50 cranes in the UK.

This one was in Sunderland :)
